Why Survivor 50 should have brought back the Ponderosa vlogs

We wish Survivor 50 had included one of fan’s favorite parts of old-school Survivor were the behind-the-scenes looks we got at Ponderosa after players became jury members.
“Reverse the Curse” – Back from tribal, tensions rise following the exit of a particularly historic player. The final five immunity challenge ends in a showdown and features one of the closest finishes the show has ever seen. Jeff reveals the outcomes of the remaining in-game fan votes and how they impact the final stage of the competition. Then, one castaway will be crowned Sole Survivor and awarded the $2 million prize, during the three-hour live season finale, on SURVIVOR 50, Wednesday, May

If you’ve been watching Survivor for the majority of the last 25 years, you know that the best media to check out after an episode wasn’t the exit press, but the Ponderosa videos following each new jury members as they leave the game and arrive at the location they’ll be sequestered at until after Final Tribal Council.

They. Were. LEGENDARY!

The videos gave us complete insight into what it was like leaving the game. From their post-elimination weigh-in to eating the comfort foods they requested and looking in the mirror for the first time in so many days, it really allowed fans to see beyond the game to the people who were out there enduring.

In a recent interview, Parvati Shallow mentioned that new era Survivor players will never be legends because they aren’t provided the same opportunities to bond with viewers by being returning players who define the game. I think part of it is also because we only see the curated social media version of them outside the game whereas back in the day Ponderosa was our taste of them as real people and not just players.

Even Ponderosa itself evolved with the game, expanding beyond just the inside look it started as to a full-blown profile of the player and their experience. It gave us immense insight before Final Tribal Council about how the jury member truly was reflecting on the game immediately upon leaving it.

And with the in-game divisiveness—as well as post-game interview bashing—between some jury members on Survivor 50, we would have loved to see a look at Ponderosa this season. I think it would have helped explain a lot about how the jury was feeling and why they voted for who they did at Final Tribal Council—in addition to why there was definitely some clashing between jurors this season.

But alas, we didn’t get anything despite Ponderosa clips existing in some of the new era seasons. While the formatting shifted slightly from full exposés on YouTube to quick 60-second clips on TikTok, we still would have loved that! Survivor 43 actually provided Ponderosa clips for every single eliminated player—not just the jury—though Survivor 48 went back to only showing perspectives of the jury.

But with a new “open era” of Survivor that supposedly will mix the best of every season, not just the new era, will Ponderosa vlogs be one of those things we see back even if it’s not technically a part of the actual game? We hope so!
