This cold-hearted cynic had a change of heart after seeing the Survivor Game Changers players talk about Cirie in the latest episode.

This post will talk about Survivor Game Changers Episode 10, “A Line Drawn in Concrete.”

Each week, CBS All Access receives a bunch of bonus clips from Survivor Game Changers episodes after they air as an incentive to get people to subscribe. Usually, these serve as added flavor for the episode, providing more perspectives than you would normally see in a traditional Survivor episode.

Having watched Survivor Game Changers episode 10 in its first run, orchestrated in a moment that was advertised as “one of the most powerful moments on Survivor,” I initially had some reservations about the moment everyone is talking about. Turns out, Cirie Fields encountered trouble finishing the Reward Challenge as the opposing team eventually won. As Sarah Lacina raced out to help her, Jeff allowed her to take as much time as necessary to complete the challenge. Eventually, with everyone cheering on, she accomplished her goal.

Before explaining why it took seeing Survivor Game Changers players talking about the moment for me to appreciate it, I would like to state that Cirie, for what it’s worth, is the greatest Survivor player to not win the game (yet). I have tons of compassion and appreciation for the gameplay she has brought this show over her four excellent seasons and am glad to see her overcome her difficulties.

I was more disappointed that this moment was what Jeff referred to as “one of the most powerful moments on Survivor” because, at the time, it felt so contrived for the sake of a feel-good moment on the show. It didn’t make sense to me because Cirie has shown on two separate occasions that she can go really far in this game despite physical difficulties in challenges. To me, the spotlight was unnecessarily placed on a player who has proven to dominate the game over most others to ever play it.

It was when I got to watch those CBS All Access confessionals that it truly clicked; it was a genuine moment of overcoming adversity that all but two players had a great appreciation for.

Troyzan commented that he had never seen anything like that in his life, and he’s a 55-year-old photographer who has traveled around the world. Andrea noted that the game stopped for a second when Cirie was out there. Aubry said that Cirie conquering the balance beam showed her everything there is to know about Cirie. Even Debbie made the astute observation that committing to doing what others say you can’t do is the perfect message for her children.

With the exception of Zeke (claiming sexism was why he was being targeted at tribal councils) and Michaela (blunt in the fact that any team Cirie picked would lose), everybody was of one mind in their confessionals; supportive. At that time, I was convinced that I had been a tad more cynical of the moment due to its packaging over its content, but Cirie Fields’ extra confession pushed it over the top. Through an understandably drained voice and teary eyes, hearing Cirie explain her motivation was to show her three boys that life is tough and that you can be even tougher just makes too much sense on a personal level.

In contrast, it gave Jeff Probst yet another opportunity to showcase how excellent of a reality television host he has become over the past 17 years. He knew that Cirie would eventually overcome the obstacles, even if it took about half an hour (by Debbie’s recollection), and made sure to change a potentially awkward or personally upsetting moment into one of the more earnest events in the show’s history.

For all these players to get it and share their admiration for Cirie immediately dispels all notion that it was a contrived moment to improve viewership to the highest point this season. It’s a shame that everyone won’t see that side of things.
