Recapping episode 2 of Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers entitled ‘I’m a Wild Banshee’.

After only getting an hour-long premiere for Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers, there was still plenty to learn. Thus, episode 2, “I’m a Wild Banshee”, likely offered a bit more of a look as to who some of the players who hadn’t necessarily been in the spotlight in the premiere actually are in this game. Let’s dive into the episode.

Things began at the Heroes tribe as they recollected following voting out Katrina. Chrissy got a confessional and a voiceover talking about how things went. As suspected, she was confident in the decision to hang on to the Super Idol. She said that she plans to use it as a decoy if she feels that she’s in danger of getting voted out.

Alan then talked about his ongoing conflict with J.P. and Ashley in a confessional, saying that he thought that he was able to create doubt. However, as the rest of the tribe discussed Alan’s erratic behavior, that was not the case. Instead, it was the opposite. Ashley voiced how “crazy” she thought Alan’s use of the term “power couple” was. Ben then said that the core four was no more and that it was “every man for themselves” on the Heroes tribe after only three days.

As the focus shifted to the Hustlers tribe, the group was, lo and behold, hustling as they worked to create an adequate camp. Devon and Ryan talked about the strength of their bond already, with the former saying that the latter was the only one he was smiling when he talked to. This might be an all-time bromance in our midsts.

In Ryan’s confessional, he noted that he was friendly with everyone except Simone, who he claimed was weird and didn’t really have any friends on the tribe. Cue a quick confessional for her as she complained about the conditions of Survivor. However, she said that her distinction as a Hustler was because she could rise up under pressure. That’s when Ali seemed to befriend her and then prop her up to try and instill some confidence — though her motives were more to try and find a tagalong and extra vote than anything else.

Far less endearing than Devon and Ryan, we got to the Healers tribe where Cole was laying on a raft as Jessica failed to catch any fish. They then flirted a little bit before a confessional for Cole had him saying that he was smitten by Jessica, but felt he was too young for her.

At the campsite, Joe and Mike actually seemed to be becoming friends, but Joe affirmed that Mike was still his public enemy No. 1 even if he started to like him. Then, Joe channeled Tony Vlachos as he went sprinting through the woods. Also like Tony, he found a clue engraved on a true that was a map to find the idol. However, he mistakenly thought the symbol was for a raft, so he approached Cole about having seen it. Cole had not, and Joe took him to the map to look at it.

The wilderness therapy guide then corrected Joe, saying that what he thought was a raft was instead the symbol for the well. Subsequently, the pair went frantically digging for it, with Joe getting hands on it first. He then expressed his concern over Cole knowing that he has the idol, saying he may have to put a target on him because of it.

Back to the Heroes tribe, JP was underwater trying to fish, and there was a sweet action shot of him catching a lobster with the spear-fishing gear. He then expressed his desire to try and quell the drama by getting everyone a full belly, which seemed to work in the moment.

He and Chrissy then walked to the well together as JP talked about not being a couple with Ashley. However, the lone remaining member of the Mom Squad said that she thought he was good in challenges, but not that smart. In a voiceover, she then went through the tribe talking about the players. She said she didn’t trust Ashley and thought that there could be a power couple. Moreover, she said that she couldn’t trust Alan after his blowup. Thus, she landed on Ben as her best choice for a stable ally, and it was formed with high hopes from each of them.

While Devon was in meditation, we cut to Patrick and Lauren digging for crabs. However, he picked one up and started screaming and freaking out, much to the chagrin of Lauren. As it turns out, he’s afraid of crabs, but he continued to be loud and boisterous as he tried to put the crab in the pot to cook and overcome his kabourophobia. Meanwhile, Lauren said that Patrick was an issue as he his personality was that of a “little boy”. She then met with Ali while taking a dip in the ocean and voiced that Patrick would wear on them. Considering the redhead’s alliance with Ali, though, that may not have gone how Lauren thought.

Challenge time, this one again for both immunity and reward. The challenge had the players swimming down to release three bags of puzzle pieces from a cage they were tied to. They then had to solve a sign puzzle after bringing the pieces back. This was for fishing gear, the ultimate package to the winners, and primitive tools for second place. Joe sat out for the Healers and Lauren for the Hustlers.

It was slow going for tribes early trying to get the pieces untied as the three players for each tribe swam out. That is, it was slow for everyone but Devon who went down and got the first quickly. JP followed with the first for the Heroes, then Roark for the Healers. However, Devon then came up with No. 2, and soon after No. 3, giving them a massive lead.

The Heroes were next to finish, JP coming up big as the Healers started to fall behind a great deal. Cole finally came through, though, switching to the focus to the puzzle. But the Hustlers and Heroes had a big head start. Thanks to Devon’s lead, they also were well ahead on the puzzle.

It looked as if the Hustlers might have it done, but the final piece was in the wrong place and they were unable to secure the win. The Heroes suffered from the same thing, but Dr. Mike’s smarts turned out to be an ace in the hole as he was able to complete the puzzle with ease and giving the Healers the win.

Back to the Hustlers, where Ali and Simone were struggling mightily in their attempts to make anything work. As they couldn’t figure out their mistakes, the Heroes were able to do just that with Chrissy on the puzzle and came in second. Thus, the Hustlers were sent to Tribal Council, with Devon noting in confessional that “Simone had to go”.

As the losing tribe went back to camp, Simone realized that her challenge performance put her in jeopardy. However, she savvily realized that Patrick was rubbing people the wrong way. So she talked to Lauren and Ali while they were at the well and seemed to think they agreed to vote out Patrick. However, Patrick and Ryan discussed the boys standing strong and predictably named Simone.

Ali talked with Pat and was amicable with him, but noted in a confessional that she had options and that it was a hard choice. Then she talked with Ryan, and really opened his eyes to the potential issues of keeping Patrick around while Simone would be easy to control. As such, it seemed like Ryan’s decision would swing the vote, saying that it was all going to come down to trust.

Fire represents their lives in this game, in case you didn’t know. We were reminded as the Hustlers lit their torches. Ryan made a hilarious observation, furthered by Jeff Probst, that this was like the birthday party for the kid you don’t like. Lauren, however, disagreed and called it a funeral. She then noted that it was nice that they coexisted so well as a tribe, especially for her as the oldest player in the group.

Then came the serious talk of trust and how critical it was, which Ali reiterated when prompted by Probst. Meanwhile, Patrick not so subtly tried to say that he deserved to stay. However, his big moment came as he said that he trusted “most” of the tribe, which caused the rest of the Hustlers to question that, leading to another humorous moment from Ryan as Pat tried to reassure everyone.

In this moment, though, everyone claimed to be nervous, although none more so than Patrick after his slip of the tongue. Simone then made her final plea to stay before it was time to vote.

With no Immunity Idols in play for the Hustlers, time for the votes to be read. The first was for Patrick, but it was then four-straight for Simone as she became the second person voted out of Survivor season 35. As it turned out, she was unanimously voted against by the five other tribe members.

So will Patrick’s boyish behavior be curbed, or will it mean his end if the Hustlers go back to Tribal? Can the budding show-mance of Cole and Jessica survive? And what will Joe or Alan do next, either silently or loudly, respectively? We’ll have to wait until next Wednesday to find out.
