We are back with our Survivor: David vs. Goliath episode 1 edgic, looking into the editing of the season and the logic of past seasons to predict a winner.

Hello, friends and Survivor edgic fans, to our first entry in the David vs. Goliath edgic discussion. Here, we will discuss the current visibility of the 20 players shown in the first episode, what each player’s story is, what their focus in the grander story is going and take a look at a few possible winner candidates.

You can’t win a season of Survivor in the first episode of the season, but it’s possible to be completely removed from the story. This isn’t Australian Survivor; there’s no invisible third place edit in the American show! However, the biblical story of David vs. Goliath taking place will make it a bit more difficult to parse, as we saw last year sometimes the Goliath takes a misstep late and takes a mighty fall.

Without further adieu, here is our Survivor: David vs. Goliath episode 1 edgic. For the premiere, we will be going in alphabetical order (which also happens to be in line with the boot arrangement).

Survivor David vs. Goliath episode 1 edgic
Created by Daniel George /

Alec Merlino (UTR1): To go a bit meta, I believe Alec’s edit is one of punishment for breaking his NDA. With the smallest representation out of any player on either tribe by almost double the second place, Alec has no chance of winning Survivor: David vs. Goliath. His one confessional didn’t speak much to anything but other players’ business.

Alison Raybould (MOR2): Alison was highlighted as an example of privilege and overconfidence in the opening challenge, setting up the idea that the mighty Goliath can fall to the meager David. This does not bode well for her long-term edit, but her knowledge of women players’ idol stats and well-rounded sympathy and acknowledgment of the David tribe’s situation shows that she may have a complex, well-rounded edit going forward.

More from David vs. Goliath

Angelina Keeley (MOR3): What makes Angelina interesting is that she was made to look condescending towards the down-and-out David tribe, but also speaks highly of her Goliath tribemates. She’s also the one to get credit in the edit for female empowerment and is part of an idol alliance early on. These signs bode well for longevity in the game, and she’s not out of the woods yet.

Bi Nguyen (UTRP2): Every themed season that breaks down people to linear designations, the edit goes hard to follow the season theme in episode 1. Bi wasn’t the most edit-forward character, but her sympathetic story of domestic abuse as the David tribe comes together established social worth within her tribe beyond her physical capabilities as an MMA fighter.

Carl Boudreaux (MOR3): Though Carl’s proven himself to be both a strategic-oriented and “hard work”-oriented player, his introduction into the season came fairly late into the 90-minute episode. Carl’s a leading voice on the David tribe now that Pat is gone, and is one of the top candidates to be a complex personality throughout the majority of his stay.

Christian Hubicki (OTT4): Christian’s token nerd stereotypical edit has placed him early as one of the voices of Survivor: David vs. Goliath as a whole. One question remains; are the editors trying to get maximum Christian fun while they have him, or will he be like Ryan Ulrich and be the tribe orator until fading back at the merge? Christian is a huge personality, but the edit undercuts him too much for a newbie to have a true winner’s edit, in my mind. I’d love to be wrong!

Dan Rengering (OTTP5): I think Dan has a solid shot at winning Survivor after seeing the first episode’s edits for David and Goliath. He may have a bit of a puppy dog lovable edit, bumbling his way to an idol and telling his attractive women friends all his moves. When the Goliath tribe is painted as selfish, incompatible people, Dan’s positive, outgoing charm after coming from a weight loss hardship reflects a Goliath the layperson wants to see win compared to the rest of his tribe.

Davie Rickenbacker (OTTP2): Davie’s octopus scene both brought him good social and survival clout with the David tribe, but also his unabashed nerditry (he calls himself a black nerd “blerd”) is perfect for a season where underdogs of society can thrive out on the island. Being a nerd that can provide for their tribe, socially or with shelter, is a good place to be, even if it’s a bit saccharine of an edit. He’s certainly not out of the running.

Elizabeth Olson (MOR3): Right now, the David tribe story is “persevere and overcome together.” Elizabeth working with Lyrsa, both of which are polar opposites outside the game, shows her social worth and her strategic acumen within the game. She’s a fan, she’s approachable, she works hard and she’s got the right attitude to represent the underdog throughout Survivor: David vs. Goliath. It’s a very strong MOR3.

Gabby Pascuzzi (CP4): Gabby is my winner pick right now for a couple of reasons. She’s a self-abashed nerd teaming up with nerds in a nerd season, but she’s also compassionate and a leading voice in her tribe. We get her perspective when Pat gets pulled from the game. She’s the one pushing the tribe motto that the edit backs up. She’s the one in the best position right now in the game.

Jeremy Crawford (UTR2): The entirety of Jeremy’s content so far has been at the behest of other Goliaths’ storylines. He’s focused on Mike White and how he’s only searching for an idol instead of working because everyone else on his tribe is looking for an idol, and he’d be a fool not to look himself. His ideals are counter to his tribe, which does not bode well long-term.

Jessica Peet (CPP3): Jessica’s edit is excellent for the short term, which is great for a premiere edit. She opened up about the hardships of her family, and she’s also getting in strategic confessional talks about how she aims for as many alliances as possible. However, that trait was negative for another member of her tribe, so we’ll have to see how this translates into game moves down the line.

John Hennigan (OTT3): Though he did talk about how he’s going to play as John Hennigan and not as one of his dozens of wrestling personas, that doesn’t prevent him from getting the “silly” music while listing them. He’s positioned well with everyone in his tribe, and I don’t think he’s out of the game. Now that he’s established as a personality, I can’t wait to see how his edit balances out.

Kara Kay (MORP2): It’ll be corrected in next week’s edgic, but Kara’s showmance story with Dan, per the edit, is less about her and more about Dan’s big push. She’s shown as talking more about her interest in him, although he does show a lot of interest in her. Kara was also in the middle of the idol hunt success, but she also warned about a showmance target. Could she and Dan be targeted early because of this?

Lyrsa Torres (MOR2): A lot of players have a MOR2 or MOR3 edit due to production sharing everyone’s perspective, and Lyrsa’s introduction came early due to the nature of the opening challenge. She was still overshadowed in each of her moments, as the focus was aimed more at Christian’s puzzle prowess and Elizabeth’s ability to cross the political line for an alliance. I’d like Lyrsa’s story to develop more if she’s long for the game.

Mike White (CPN4): Despite everyone on the Goliath tribe looking for an idol on Day 2, Mike White doing so on Day 1 drew the ire of his tribe, and the prospective target was him early on. He’s not a comic book villain, but with the tribe knowing his Hollywood status and his fandom, he’s in one of the worst spots so far. I don’t think he can win the game in the long run.

Natalia Azoqa (MOR2): Right now, Natalia’s story is “Natalie needs to go.” When the majority of the introduction episode is dedicated to painting a target on someone else’s back, especially one that’s not bigger than another target the tribe wants, it does not bode well for her in the short term. Especially when Natalie has a lot going for her.

Natalie Cole (OTTN3): Though Natalie introduced herself early as one of the proven leaders of the Goliath tribe, she’s certainly the target of Natalia’s ire. She talks about the culture shock on a tribe where people won’t take a bullet for her compared to her real job, and Natalia’s words (and the camera’s editorial eye) suggests there’s truth to her “creepy” warden-like vibes. However, I think we’re going to see a powerhouse come forward out of this. At least, it would make the show interesting.

ick has one of the more complex edits I’ve ever seen of a strategic player. He looks villainous due to his sneaky ways of looking busy, and the hard-working David tribe’s leaders don’t like that. He’s also making alliance partners with everyone as a strategy, but he’s docked points for that. Then he opens up hours later about his mother, and it seems like the negativity prior is washed away.

I don’t know what to make of Nick Wilson, but he’s got enough powerful positivity clashing against his negativity to suggest a shocking pre-merge boot right at the end.

Pat Cusack (OTTM5): Poor Pat. He was deemed one of the overbearing, but positive, voices of the David tribe, and proved his worth as their defacto leader. One bump in a boat ride we couldn’t predict took him out, but his uplifting post-Immunity speech contrasted with his “barking orders” edit early to give him a mixed-tone edit worthy of the game’s first r.obbed g.oddess.
