This week, CBS kicked off a—sort of—countdown to Survivor 51 as they re-air the most recent season, which was a major milestone for the franchise and even got them nominated for five Emmy Awards.
And while, for the most part, Survivor 50 was well-received by fans (I personally, think, overall, they did a great job with the anniversary season), there was one specific episode early on in the season that simply did not hit any mark and was, in fact, so far away from the target that some viewers turned off the show entirely mid-way through the episode, others muted their devices until a certain portion was over, and the rest watched every second and then went to IMDB and gave it the lowest rating for any episode in all of Survivor’s history.
And now, as CBS is re-airing the entire season, we can’t help but wonder if there will even be any viewers who tune in on Wednesday, July 29th for the re-broadcast of Survivor 50 episode 4, “Knife to the Heart.” It’s like that one song on an album that everyone collectively agrees is the “skip song” and only has, like, one bar highlighted on streaming services verses the rest of the songs that are lit up like Times Square on New Years Eve.
The original synopsis provided for the episode prior to its initial premiere was: “Castaways help pass the time on their beach by hosting the ‘SURVIVOR 50 Talent Show.’ Another boomerang idol is discovered, and players must decide whether to send it to an ally or an adversary. Then, the biggest reward of the season is on the line as tribes compete for immunity and a special afternoon with country music star and SURVIVOR superfan, Zac Brown, on SURVIVOR 50.”
So, if you weren’t able to tune-in to the episode live the first time it aired, now’s your chance to feel a part of the worldwide experience of slowly being turned against country music and spearfishing within a 30-minute timespan as Zac Brown monologues to the camera, confessional-style, about why he loves Survivor.
And while the episode as a whole was not horrifically marred by the country singer’s appearance like we all probably remember it being—there was still plenty of gameplay that happened—it’s still one of those small blips on a radar that messes with our memories exponentially.
So I’ll be very interested to see if anyone actually tunes in to watch Survivor 50 episode 4, “Knife to the Heart” when it re-airs next Wednesday, July 29 at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount +. Are you excited to tune in?
