The countdown to the Survivor 48 finale has ticked down from days to hours and the heart rates of fans have collectively risen as we wait to discover who will take home $1 million and the title of Sole Survivor for a rollercoaster season.
In a newly released clip (below), all our castaways can be found in their usual spot—the log on the beach—watching the sunrise, but you can tell that the first light of Day 26 holds a much different energy. Joe Hunter expresses it best when he shares that he wasn't even sure if he was going to make it this far in the game.
But while Joe might be feeling the awe of the moment, for the viewers at home, his spot in the finale feels somewhat inevitable.
"This is the fourth quarter," Joe said. "It's the game right before the Super Bowl, and we're away playing Green Bay. It's cold. I'm tired, but you survive and you go, 'Okay, I gotta strap on these pads now, and now it's time to play."
Has Joe ever been truly at risk this season?
While there have been more players than there are seats on the jury who have advocated for voting out Joe, it's never felt like something that could actually happen—no matter how much everyone has made it clear that he will win if he gets to the end. Even with all the attempts to take him out, no one has been able to get rid of him because he's established such incredible social bonds that he's just too honest to go against.
So, while it wasn't shocking to see other members of the Strong 5 alliance like David Kinne and Shauhin Davari blindsided and sent to the jury, it continues to be both surprising and unsurprising that Joe maintains a place in the game even after the Tribal Councils where he hasn't won himself the safety of the immunity necklace.
At this point, I both want Joe to win the game while also hoping he gets blindsided by Kyle Fraser and Kamilla Karthigesu. But is he too untouchable to get rid of at this point? Have our players lost any shot they might have needed to vote him out? Is his win almost guaranteed?
All these questions and more are so close to being answered in the three-hour season finale of Survivor 48 airing Wednesday, May 21st at 8pm ET on CBS and Paramount+!
